Sensitive Teeth

If you are experiencing discomfort and pain while brushing your teeth or consuming either hot or cold beverages, you clearly have sensitive teeth. Having sensitive teeth can keep you from doing normal everyday tasks such as enjoying your food.

Imagine for a second that it’s too hot outside and in order to beat that heat you feel like drinking something cold to cool down. Unfortunately, sensitive teeth can keep you from doing such a simple a thing.

Even if you do so you will end up experiencing a lot more discomfort and irritation. In this way, people with sensitive teeth have to compromise on a lot of things when it comes to protecting themselves from painful experiences.

What is the Major Cause of Sensitive Teeth?

Receding gums are the major reason behind tooth sensitivity as they end up exposing dentin, which is nothing but a tissue that resides under the enamel. When this area is stripped, changes in temperature may cause it to become too sensitive. Therefore, whenever you eat foods that are too spicy or drink something hot or cold, you start feeling pain.

Other Factors that lead to Tooth Sensitivity

1. Damaged Teeth

If you have a damaged tooth, there is a chance that it can strip the dentin which eventually makes your tooth sensitive. What’s even more disturbing is that exposed dentin allows oral bacteria to harm your nerves.

2. Hard Brushing

You should never brush your teeth too violently as that can damage your tooth enamel. In addition to that, it can also damage your gum line and reveal teeth roots which can make your teeth sensitive.

3. Age

When it comes to sensitive teeth, your age also plays a crucial role in it. Experts believe that your teeth are more vulnerable to sensitivity if you fall within the ages of 25 and 30 years.

4. Teeth grinding

If you want to keep your teeth enamel in perfect condition, then you must stop grinding your teeth. If you have a habit of teeth grinding, you will surely end up damaging the enamel which eventually results in exposing the dentin that leads to tooth sensitivity.

5. Tooth Bleaching

Nowadays, a wide number of people go for tooth bleaching. However, the products used by experts in this treatment process which include baking soda are really harmful to your teeth. Products containing baking soda can annoy the dentin.

6. Gum Disease

Gum disease (Periodontal disease) is one of the most important causes of sensitive teeth. It is caused by bacterial infection, which happens mainly because of poor oral hygiene.

Bacteria grow extremely fast in your mouth if you don’t brush and floss in the right time. In other words, crappy dental hygiene makes your mouth a perfect place for bacterial growth, which affects your teeth and gum-line and eventually leads to gum disease. Because of this problem, your gums start receding which makes your teeth sensitive.

How to Identify Sensitive Teeth

Once you have had a dental checkup, your dentist will be in a better position to tell everything about your teeth and its condition. He/she can easily identify exposed dentin, and can also figure out its cause.

Once the cause behind your sensitive teeth is identified it can be treated effectively. In addition to that, if you have any other dental problem, you will get to know about that from your dentist.

How to cure the problem of Sensitive Teeth

In order to cure the problem of sensitive teeth, it is really important to use toothpaste that contains potassium nitrate as it helps in providing relief from the pain and irritation caused by tooth sensitivity. It helps in soothing affected tooth.

In addition to that, your toothpaste should also contain a high amount of fluoride which makes your teeth stronger.

It’s also important to use a toothbrush that has soft bristles so as not to cause any damage to your gum-line which can occur due to intense brushing.
