Valentine's Day

My worst Valentine’s Day experience is so bad I can’t believe I’m actually telling it on the internet. But here goes… it was the morning of Valentine’s Day and my boyfriend had promised that we would be staying in to have a romantic night, he would bring the refreshments. I was so anxious, that I came home from work early and even bought new lingerie on the way. I heard that oysters were a good aphrodisiac so I bought some of those too and started eating them to prepare for the night ahead. To my surprise, I began having frequent loose stools, these were very smelly, and it seemed like I couldn’t stop going to the bathroom. When my boyfriend called to say that he was coming over, I had to make up some silly story so we could get into a fight and to deter him from coming. We haven’t spoken since.

My best Valentine’s Day was in 2006 when I got my first set of real roses from a guy ever. I was very excited, felt like a princess receiving real roses and chocolate from a prince. I have always seen my friends get roses since high school and now it was finally my turn.

My best valentine’s experience was when my husband (then my fiancé) drove all the way from Kingston (Jamaica) to Montego Bay without my knowledge to ensure I received my gift on that day. I was at school at the time and when I came back from lunch I saw this gift bag in my seat so I said. “A who leave dem gift in me seat” then my classmate who facilitated the surprise said to look at it and see who it belonged to. It read “To you from you know who” that one took me by surprise (which I hate). The worst experience was actually on that same day. I called my then fiancé and thanked him for the gift but did give him a thrashing for doing it behind my back knowing I hate surprises. Can you believe how stupid that was? I felt so bad afterward… I have grown so much since.

It was my first Valentine Day outing with my new girlfriend and I told her we should just keep it simple by having a romantic walk on the beach. However, I was secretly pulling out all the stunts trying to make this as romantic as possible because I knew later would be greater. So I asked one of my friends to set up a picnic area along the side where we would be passing and ask another to hide in a boat nearby and when he saw the signal that we were thirsty, he should dive into the water and bring the bottle of champagne. This blew her mind and I was then sure that my later would be greater as we started to kiss and make out. We then set out for home, but while on our way she saw an ice cream shop and suddenly said she felt for some. Not wanting to tell her I had sinusitis I agreed and had a cone as well, because hey, what can one cone do? Unfortunately, I spent the rest of my later sneezing, taking meds and being nursed by her rather than you know what. Kmt, stupid ice cream!

It was a week before Valentine’s Day and the buzz around town was on, I noticed however that my boyfriend was a bit quiet about the issue. Thinking nothing of it I said to myself “oh well, he just doesn’t want to spoil the surprise gift he has for me.” On valentines morning he called and we talked as usual, so I rushed over to his place thinking that was my hint to come over. To my surprise, he was still lounged in pajamas on the couch with a blank look. When he saw the gift I bought him, he said “oh, sorry hun, I forgot to tell you I don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day” I stood there with my mouth wide open and speechless.
